Is there regulatory oversight on Managed Forest lands?

Managed forest lands in British Columbia are subject to regulatory oversight under the Private Managed Forest Land program.

Regulatory Framework
  • The Managed Forest Council: An independent provincial agency administers the act, conducts regular inspections and audits, and enforces standards.
  • Enforcement Powers: The council can issue remediation orders, stop-work orders, and financial penalties up to $25,000 for non-compliance.

    Protected Environmental Values
Participating landowners must manage their property to protect core public values, which include:
    • Soil conservation and productivity
    • Water quality and human drinking water protection
    • Fish habitat preservation
    • Critical wildlife habitat protection
    • Prompt reforestation within required timeframes

      Additional Laws
In addition to the managed forest regulations, landowners must comply with overarching provincial and federal legislation, such as the Water Sustainability Act, Wildfire Act, and the federal Fisheries Act.
