It’s National Forest Week

September 22-28, 2024 is National Forest Week in Canada. The event is organized by the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF-IFC) to celebrate Canada’s forest heritage and to raise awareness about this valuable and renewable resource.

The theme of National Forest Week this year is “Two-Eyed Seeing: Welcoming all knowledge to sustain our forests.” This theme is an important one for the PFLA and our members and our continued focus on sustainable forest management. Managed Forest Land is a BC Assessment property classification (class 7) established in 1988 to encourage private landowners to manage their lands for long-term forest production. Entrance into the program is voluntary and requires a number of commitments, including compliance with the Private Managed Forest Land Act and regulations, and protection of key environmental values. For more information on eligibility requirements for the Managed Forest Program visit www.mfcouncil.ca/landowners/what-is-managed-forest-land.

National Forest Week is a great time to learn more about one of Canada’s most valuable resources. Visit the Canadian Institute of Forestry website for educational resources and activity sheets. Even better – take a walk in woods and get to know your local forest.
