Home Ignition Zone Assessment
It’s early Spring, and a great time to think about steps you can take to reduce the risk of wildfire around your home.
Your home, and the immediate 30-metre vicinity, play the most crucial role in deciding whether your home will ignite and suffer damage during a wildland fire. This area is commonly referred to as the “Home Ignition Zone” (HIZ). A properly maintained HIZ is designed to significantly lower the intensity of the fire and its ability to spread. When residents collaborate as a community to establish interconnected HIZs, they can drastically reduce the risk of large scale structure to structure ignition.
You can use a FireSmart assessment to determine your risk from wildfire using the Home Ignition Zone! By answering the questions in the assessment they will be able to recommend changes that will make the greatest difference in defending against structure ignition.
